Writing Workshop using Foxfire Principles
ELACC3W2 Text Types and Purposes: Write informative/explanatory texts to
examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.
EQ: How has
the Morton Theatre and its owner Pink Morton developed the Athens community?
Vocab: performing
arts, segregation, vaudeville, Hot Corner, venue, heritage,
construction
Opening: Picture Walk – Students will be in small groups and
will receive a picture on an index card.
They will communicate with members of their group to determine what they
will be studying. Then all the different
pictures will be shared and the class will bounce ideas to connect the topic of
study
Mini-Lesson: African-American Driving Tour – discovering
all Athens has to offer document (PDF with images)
Class discussion circle: Why do you think we are studying the Morton
Theatre/African-American influences on Athens, GA? Why is this important? Students and teachers will bounce ideas
off of one another to better understand what this inquiry project entails. The teacher will write responses on the Smart
Board.
Work time: Students will write a list of questions they
have about the Morton Theatre/Pink Morton/Athens music scene so we can further
discuss them the next two weeks. They
will turn these questions into the teachers, and we will make sure to dive into
the questions the students want the answers to.
Differentiation: a small group
will work with teacher for extended time
Closing:
Commit and toss: Students are
to write on a piece of scratch paper if they knew what the Morton Theatre was
before we talked about it (yes or no answer).
Those results will be displayed on a bar graph and will be used later in
the research project.
Assessment:
Participation and engagement in
discussion of the day 1 inquiry project and graph results

Share Reading—nonfiction, When Marian

While the author reads an excerpt, students are
to follow along with the many copies of the text. When the author is finished, the students and
teachers will take turns reading the remainder of the story.
