Today was the first day of the inquiry project, and the students were very excited and curious as to what we were going to start learning. To begin our literacy block, I gave each table a card with a picture on it. Some examples of the pictures were REM, B52s, barber shop, burnt down building, Pink Morton, admit one ticket, etc. I call this opening a "picture walk." As a small group, students discussed what their card might be and what we would be studying. One by one, each group showed the other classmates their card and predictions as to what it might be. The students were excited and engaged, and this is what I am expecting in an engaging lesson. I finally revealed that we would be studying the Morton Theatre in Athens, Georgia. Part of the Foxfire Principles is to connect the community in lessons to make learning a realistic experience so students can make connections. As a result, we created a list of questions together as to what the children wanted to know about the Morton Theatre, Hot Corner, and Mr. Pink Morton. Below are two pictures. The first picture is of the questions the children came up with while exploring our topic of study. Next is a bar graph we made that recorded the students' responses answering the question: Have you ever heard of the Morton Theatre before we discussed it today? More updates are coming soon! -Ms. Orem
